THE UNFINISHED MOSQUE OF KOREA

An upcoming documentary by Mike Beech & Keith Park

Synopsis

In Daegu, South Korea, an unfinished mosque lies at the center of a years-long conflict between Muslim international students and local residents.

What began as a construction project in a quiet residential neighborhood has grown into a much larger confrontation over religion, immigration, multiculturalism, and who gets to belong.

The film follows the conflict from the students' decision to build the mosque, through years of opposition, legal battles, protests, and Islamophobic attacks, to the structural issue that ultimately brought construction to an indefinite halt.

At its center are Muslim student representative Muaz Razaq and opposition leader Kim Jeong-ae, alongside students, residents, activists, religious figures, and others directly involved in the dispute.

Through their perspectives, archival material, and observational footage, the film explores not only the conflict itself, but the institutional failures, genuine grievances, prejudice, and political forces that have allowed it to continue.

The mosque remains unfinished, and the question it represents remains unresolved.

Current Status

The Unfinished Mosque of Daegu is currently in production, with the film scheduled for release in 2027.

Filming is ongoing, with additional interviews, observational footage, and archival material being incorporated as the story continues to develop.
